Chertoff: Bush to nominate new DHS undersecretary

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has announced that President Bush intends to nominate Paul Schneider as undersecretary for management at DHS.

In a statement, Chertoff said Schneider will bring to DHS a wealth of management knowledge and nearly 40 years of experience in federal service.

Schneider began his career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a project engineer in 1965. He was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in 1981 and served as the deputy director of Naval Sea Systems Command’s Auxiliary Systems Sub-Group. He later was executive director and senior civilian of Navsea and principal deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition.

In 2002, he became the Senior Acquisition Executive at the National Security Agency.

Most recently, Schneider was a defense and aerospace consultant and led a congressionally directed study for NASA and the Navy. Schneider also played a major role in the administration’s effort to develop the Next Generation Air Transportation System.
