Letter: Giuliani doesn't understand federal workforce

In response to "Giuliani: Federal workforce is too big," maybe Rudy Giuliani hasn't seen the government workforce to know exactly how it works. In my series (1740) alone there are so many staffing shortages we can't get the work accomplished and we have gone automatic. The problem is when the automated system finally was working at full force, some things still had to go through a human set of hands otherwise schools would not have accepted the soldiers' credentials or they would be failing course work. That would have cost the government more money and the soldier hardship that would not have made for a well-rounded soldier and caused mental problems that would not have allowed him to function on the battlefield or anywhere else in this man's Army. Most government employees are contractors, not federal employees. They charge the government the same or more than what a federal employee would cost in the same job. Contractors cannot sign for or obligate the government, so a federal employee is still needed. Contractors can only do what is specifically mentioned in the contract, whereas government employees' job description always reads at the end, "...and other duties as assigned." So, if Giuliani feels that the federal government is too fat, spend a day in my shoes.
