Letter: Maybe DOD should ban Internet Explorer instead
A reader wonders how much of DOD’s security problem could be solved by using the Firefox browser rather than potentially blocking access to other agencies’ sites.
Regarding “DOD considers prohibiting personal use of networks”: Better make sure that civilian Web sites used/hosted by first responders, other government agencies, defense contractors, Web 2.0 collaboration efforts, etc., are not blocked as well.
What percent of the problem would be solved if we banned Microsoft Internet Explorer and made Firefox mandatory for all .mil computers? More than the IT community would like to admit, I suspect.
