Letter: FOIA helps balance secrecy and openness
A reader says it’s not easy for the military to keep track of what information still needs to be secret, which is where FOIA comes in.
Regarding “Marines restore access to online documents”: It is well-known that military forces can lose wars if key secrets leak out. I have not heard of a single case of a military with no secrets winning any modern-era conflict.
When lives are at stake, the people involved need to be overly conservative and protect as much information as possible.
It is not as easy as it might sound to keep just the right secrets, especially as situations change. In a democracy, we strike a balance — that is what the Freedom of Information Act is all about.
