Letter: Recruitment woes lead to retiree rehires
A reader says federal agencies have changed their tune because of recruitment difficulties.
Regarding " Bill to rehire retirees gets qualified support": For years we have heard the drivel that the feds are not as qualified as people in the private sector, that we receive too much pay, benefits, etc.
Now that the agencies find they cannot recruit people with comparable skills, we start hearing entreaties to come back, be mentors, etc. Do you see a disconnect here?
I worked in contracts for more than 30 years, and saw my counterparts in the private sector getting double or triple my pay. True, their jobs weren't as permanent, but many of my counterparts moved to progressively higher salaries as they kept changing companies. With the feds' new retirement system they have little to offer that can compete with private enterprise. The birds are finally coming home to roost!
