Letter: Beware of workforce layoffs and hires

A readers says the employee who has been working at DOD for 20 years or more may not have "seniority retention privileges."

Regarding "Unions say NSPS rules could hurt DOD employees": Beyond the failures for [the Defense Department] to negotiate in good faith during the entire [National Security Personnel System] process, DOD also has the right to layoff who they want.

In today's times of economic hardship and faced with the fact that the government will [now] have to cut back. The faithful employee who has worked for the government for 20 or even 30 years no longer has seniority retention privileges.

Now the government can simply say to a faithful senior employee that we are changing your job and Voila!, a 20-year employee can be laid off in favor of an employee with only a couple of years employement.  Watch how this plays out in the very near future as the [economy] worsens.
