Army mandates knowledge principles

Senior Army officials have mandated the adoption of 12 principles intended to foster the sharing of knowledge servicewide, according to a recent news release.The Army’s secretary and chief of staff issued the knowledge management memo Aug. 11. It is the second memo Army leaders have distributed on the topic since 2001.The Army's chief information officer will issue a policy to direct managers’ knowledge management efforts, and Army commands and organizations will develop strategies for carrying out the policy, the news release states.“Knowledge management is about connecting those who know with those who need to know and leveraging that knowledge across the institutional Army and to contractors, nongovernmental organizations, the other military services and coalition partners,” it states.“Knowledge management goals support an Army that automatically shares intellectual capital with no structural or technical barriers, an Army that values good ideas regardless of their source, and an Army that really collaborates and values collaboration as a means to mission success,” the release states.The CIO Council established a Federal Knowledge Management Working Group in 2000, but it was disbanded in 2007.
