IG: Coast Guard needs to improve security

The Coast Guard is doing a good job of securing its computer networks, but it still has vulnerabilities that must be addressed, according to a new report from Homeland Security Department Inspector General Richard Skinner. The audit found that the Coast Guard has implemented network security controls but is falling short in some areas. “While [the] U.S. Coast Guard has been vigilant in its efforts to secure its network infrastructure, we identified system vulnerabilities and areas of noncompliance” with DHS requirements, Skinner's report stated. In addition, the agency has not established all the necessary network access controls, the audit said. If the issues are not addressed, the Coast Guard faces the possibility of loss of sensitive information and gaps in its network security, the document said . Skinner posted a redacted version of his report on the office’s Web site. The IG made five recommendations for improvements, and Coast Guard officials agreed with four of the five recommendations.
