Letter: CIO better solution than CTO
A reader agrees with the founder of Monash Research that President-elect Barack Obama's should appoint a "true CIO" to handle issues such as procurement.
Regarding "Should Obama's CTO be a CIO?"
Yes, yes, yes. A federal chief technology officer is too narrow of a designation and sphere of influence. The chief information officer role is meant to best blend and use people, process, technology and innovation. Many of our most challenging issues are not technology issues but rather organizational, human capital or process related.
A CTO brings better technologies, which is great, but we need to solve problems that aren't solved by technology alone. A federal level CIO is a much better solution.
