It may take well beyond the end of George W. Bush’s tenure as U.S. chief executive for all White House e-mails and documents to be transferred to the National Archives, the Washington Post reported.

The transfer, required by law, is estimated at more than 300 million messages and 25,000 boxes of documents. The National Security Archive research group and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Government sued in the White House in 2007 to compel it to preserve backup e-mail tapes.

The data transfer has been imperiled by a combination of technical glitches, lawsuits, and lagging computer forensic work, the Post said.
