Carey has taken a strong leadership role as co-chairman of the CIO Council’s new Information Security and Identity Management Committee. That panel is aligning the efforts of a number of related groups and maintaining a sharp focus on the knottiest issues of information technology security, identity and privacy.
Carey is probably best known for being the first federal CIO to host a public blog. He has also introduced other Web 2.0 innovations, including wikis, and has worked to ensure that the Navy’s IT priorities reflect the needs of warfighters.
“Rob's personal dedication, energy, innovative ideas and team-building skills are superb, and he is making a difference to the federal IT community every day,” said David Wennergren, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for information management, integration and technology.
