Gundersen is paving the way for projects that share government data via open-source technology.

In the Apps for Democracy contest last year, his team won recognition for two Web sites that tap into Washington, D.C., government data. Gundersen's projects have ranged as far afield as Afghanistan, where he worked to share data from that nation’s election, and he was involved in the Race to Resilience: Pandemic Information Sharing Initiative.

William Gaskins, executive vice president of the Efiia Group, said Gundersen’s leadership on that project helped lessen the impact of the H1N1 virus in the United States last year. “His creative approach to utilizing open-source solutions to engage dialogues between public- and private-sector entities provided much-needed resilience at the community level, especially for those in most desperate need,” Gaskins said.
