Huskey found a way to improve communications for deployed personnel and take care of wounded veterans making the shift to civilian life.
He led the Wireless Pierside Connection System, an innovative solution for transmitting voice and data between ships and shore. It is now viewed as a model for a wireless Navy grid.
Huskey also led the Veterans Individual Training Assistance Link (VITAL), which provides information technology training for wounded veterans and mentors them for eventual placement as government employees.
Huskey “worked with leadership across Navy and DOD organizations and led the process with diplomacy and candor, gaining the trust and respect of senior leadership,” said Robert Carey, the Navy's chief information officer. "The VITAL program has attracted a great deal of interest for further expansion to other Navy commands and other federal agencies."
