Simmons has instituted knowledge management concepts that enables the Marine Corps to decentralize operations and create virtual work environments.

"Ron is doing exciting things with [knowledge management] for the Marine Corps as well as the [Defense] Department," said Barbara Hoffman, the Navy’s principal deputy chief information officer. "One of the most interesting is the virtual work environment he's building based on [knowledge management] principles."

That environment has become a model throughout the Marine Corps. To guide the program to success, Simmons traveled to Iraq for a pilot project so he could have a thorough understanding of how knowledge management solutions work in such environments.
