Federal 100: Vivek Kundra

When President Barack Obama appointed Kundra to be the nation’s first chief information officer, Kundra became the face of government information technology.

In his first year, Kundra championed several initiatives related to IT. He encouraged agencies to adopt emerging technologies, such as social media and cloud computing, and was a driving force behind several open-government initiatives, including the creation of Data.gov, a Web portal where the public can access datasets from federal agencies.

Kundra “has helped to create a culture of experimentation, creativity and risk-taking within the federal government,” said Mark Drapeau, director of innovative social engagement at Microsoft's U.S. Public Sector and a Federal Computer Week columnist. “There's a long way to go, but the leadership of Vivek Kundra has certainly helped to evolve government into something more transparent, collaborative and participatory than ever before.”
