Hacker Peeked at Names and Licenses of As Many As 50,000 Uber Drivers

An unauthorized entity accessed an Uber database last spring, the ride-sharing company disclosed on Feb. 27.

The company discovered last fall that one of the encryption keys required to unlock the system had been compromised, according to the LA Times. “The company said it could not say how the security vulnerability was first discovered because the matter was under investigation,” the Times reports.

Tens of thousands of current and former Uber drivers might have had their personal information exposed. The breached files contained the name and driver’s license number of the employees.

Uber has filed a so-called John Doe lawsuit to gather information that might “lead to confirmation of the identity of the third party,” Managing Counsel of Data Privacy Katherine Tassi said in a blog post.
