The Government Printing Office will hold a Federal Fitness Day on May 16. Acting Public Printer William H. Turri and hundreds of GPO employees will form teams to compete in running and walking events.
GPO sees this two-hour event as important "not only for workforce productive and organizational effectiveness," but also for the health and well being of federal employees. The activities will include 2-mile and 1-mile runs, a 2-mile walk and 1-mile competitive walk and relays. Go GPO!
According to the Office of Personnel Management, nearly 40,000 federal employees registered for the 2007 HealthierFeds Physical Activity Challenge. That involved doing a physical activity several times a week for six weeks. Of those who registered, some 4,100 federal employees completed the ch0allenge. No one said it would be easy.
As for results the departments and agencies with many of participants included Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, and the Social Security administration. At smaller agencies, fewer people registered, but still, agencies such as NASA, the Veterans Administration and the Commerce Department had numerous people completing the challenge.
