FBI Selects New Tech Leader From Its Own Ranks

A 20-year veteran of the bureau will facilitate the FBI’s modernization efforts as head of the Information and Technology Branch.
The FBI has a new technology leader with the appointment of John Adams as the next executive assistant director of the Information and Technology Branch.
The Information and Technology Branch manages the bureau’s IT infrastructure, including providing hardware and software solutions at offices and in the field and leading the FBI’s modernization efforts.
In the past, the executive assistant director has also held the role of CIO. However, Gordon Bitko was named FBI CIO in 2016 and continues to hold that position.
Adams takes over ITB leadership from James Turgal, who had been leading the branch on an acting basis after the departure of Dean Hall in 2015. Turgal left the bureau for the private sector in October.
Adams joined the bureau in 1997, investigating espionage, drug trafficking, violent crime and terrorism out of the Washington Field Office. Most recently, he served in the Directorate of Intelligence as the assistant director.
FBI Director Christopher Wray appointed Adams to the new role on Feb. 26.
