Gateway gets Navy hardware deal

Gateway has won a $2.7 million contract to provide hardware and information technology services on more than 300 Navy ships and submarines for the service’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation Division.

The products will allow sailors in ships and submarine libraries to access the Internet. They will be able to use e-mail and videoconferencing capabilities to contact family and friends. The computers will also let the sailors take academic skills training and college classes through the Navy College Program for Afloat College Education.

“We are very pleased to provide powerful solutions to keep personnel in touch with loved ones while they are serving our country,” said Vin Riera, vice president for government sales at Gateway.

Gateway will deliver more than 1,100 E-6300 desktop computers and monitors, 100 M460E notebook computers and 90 9210 SCSI computer servers. The company will also provide more than 600 other products including CD towers, scanners, color printers and network switches, according to a company statement.

Hardware and software for the Navy’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation Division does not fall under the Navy Marine Corps Intranet, said Marissa Jabczenski, a company spokeswoman. The NMCI contract, managed by EDS, provides computer operations and maintenance for shore-based facilities.
