Military Health System appoints CIO

Retired Army Col. Carl E. Hendricks has been appointed chief information officer of the Military Health System.

Hendricks spent 26 years in the Army Medical Service Corps, where he concentrated on health information technology and acquisition management. His last Army assignment was serving as program executive officer for the Joint Medical Information Systems Office. After retiring, he was CIO for the Arizona Telemedicine Program and also worked on Army telemedicine programs.

Hendricks replaces James Reardon, the long-time Military Health System CIO who retired in January.

In his new post, Hendricks also directs information management, technology and re-engineering for the Tricare Management Activity.

Dr. William Winkenwerder, assistant secretary of Defense for health affairs, said in a statement that Hendricks’ “years of managerial, design and deployment experience with the military’s [electronic health records] will help reach out and guide our industry partners.”
