Budget woes kill Army IT conference
Next week's event in Orlando could be one of many casualties of new funding restrictions.

The Army has unexpectedly canceled its annual Information Technology Conference, which had been scheduled to begin June 5 in Orlando. The Army cited severe operations and maintenance funding restrictions to explain the cancellation.
The Army IT Conference is an annual event that brings together more than 600 Army, Defense Department and other federal employees and contractors. The Army Small Computer Program, a division of the Program Executive Office for Enterprise Information Systems, sponsors the conference. It serves as the premier showcase for IT products and services available on ASCP contracts.
Keynote speakers for the conference had included John Grimes, assistant secretary of Defense for networks and information integration, Kevin Carroll, PEO-EIS’ director, and Vernon Bettencourt, DOD’s deputy chief information officer.
The service encouraged registered attendees to cancel their hotel reservations.
Army operations and maintenance received $24.9 billion for fiscal 2006 in the National Defense Authorization Act. That is a decrease compared with $26.1 billion in fiscal 2005.
